  1. He contrasts the wealth of Scrooge with the poverty of Bob Cratchit. Scrooge lives alone in a large building with a grand staircase while the Cratchits are crammed into a four-roomed house in the suburbs
  2. In Stave 4, Scrooge visits a part of London that ‘‘reeked with crime, with filth and with misery’’ and the people who live there are described as ‘‘half-naked,drunken,ugly’’
  3. The death of Tiny and Tim and the appearance of the doomed children, Ignorance and Want, highlight the suffering of children in poverty.

Dickens disagreed - he thought there was plenty of food to go around but only if the rich were more generous. He thought it was wrong that the poor should suffer because the rich were too selfish to share their wealth

This is evident in Stave 3 - The Ghost of Christmas Present takes Scrooge to the bustling shops where it shows him the huge amount of food on display. The lengthy, mouth-watering description emphasises Dicken’s point.
