Chemistry > C3.4 Giant ionic structures > Flashcards
Why can a solid ionic compound not conduct electricity
Because its ions are held in fixed positions in the lattice, they can’t move around only vibrate
When do ionic compounds not conduct electricity
In solids, but do when molten or when dissolved in water since they can carry charge through liquids
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points
Because it takes alot of energy to break the strong ionic bonds
