Q

Define ‘crop rotation’.

A

Crop rotation is the swapping of usually two or more varieties of crops either during the same year or in alternating years. Some of the reasoning behind crop rotation is for economic purposes, others include less pests, weed management, and sequestering nutrients. By rotating corn and soy beans the farmer can benefit from the added nitrogen in the soil and the deterrent of common pests that plague either corn or soy beans.

Q

Match the following crop rotations.

A

Ratoon cropping: After harvest, the crop is allowed to regrow for a second harvest the same season.
Intercropping: Seeding a second crop in the field before the first crop is harvested.
Double-cropping: Planting another crop after the first is harvested and before the end of the growing season.
