Involves the researcher developing categories for the data to be classified. These categories provide a framework to convert the qualitative material into quantitative data, which can then be used for further (statistical) analysis.

• Data is collected
• Read through and examine data to become familiar
• Identify coding units
• The data is analysed by applying the coding units
• A tally is made of the number of times that a coding unit appears

Thematic analysis is a technique that helps identify themes throughout qualitative data.
A theme is an idea or notion, and can be explicit or implicit.
Thematic analysis will produce further qualitative data, but will be more refined.

• Can produce subjective findings. The researcher may interpret things in an interview due to their personal preconceptions, judgements or biases.
• Ecological validity- most of this research is based from conclusions off of real life behaviour
