Do NOT give aspirin to a child < 18 years old, it can cause Reye’s syndrome.
Give acetaminophen or NSAIDs instead. Sometimes aspirin is prescribed by the HCP for treatment of Kawasaki’s disease. So only give aspirin to a child if it’s prescribed.
How long after an antipyretic is given should the temperature be checked again for evaluation?

Phenylketonuria
A genetic disorder where the child lacks the enzyme to break down amino acids that are found in foods that contain protein.
Toxicity can build up and cause intellectual disability.
How is phenylketonuria diagnosed?
With the PKU test.

Restrict foods with phenylalanine:
- infant will need to be started on a special formula or be breastfed
- avoid meats, dairy products, and aspartame
What types of foods should be provided to a child to prevent child obesity and type II diabetes?
- drink water instead of soda, juice, or sports drinks
- limit fast food
- eat more fruits and vegetables, and whole grains
What is the recommended physical activity for a child?
- be active at least 1 hour a day
- limit screentime to 1 hour a day - no screen time for children less than 2 years old
- if playing video games, play interactive games that require physical activity
What are the warning signs and symptoms that a child may have diabetes?
- increased thirst and urination
- blurry vision
- unusual fatigue
Can a child be allowed to check their own glucose level and give themselves insulin?
YES. As long as the child has the motor skills and knowledge, they can start checking their own blood sugar and give themselves insulin starting at age 6.
