Simple Fracture
Separation of a body into two or more pieces in response to an imposed stress that is static
Two steps of fracture?
Crack formation and propagation
Stable crack?
A crack that resists any further extension unless there is an increase in applied stress.
Unstable crack?
Once started, continues spontaneously without an increase in applied stress.
Why is ductile fracture preferred over brittle fracture?
Ductile is noticeable before failure occurs, however brittle fracture occurs suddenly and catastrophically without warning.
