Alliteration
The use of the same letter before each word for emphasis I on the text
Assonance
The sound of assonance coming from within the word rather than at the start
Consonance
Constant sounds at the end of words (non vowel sounds)
Cacophony
Often K’s, T’s and ch’s worked in at the end of words and at the beginning together which are harsh and jarring because of a lack of harmony.
Onomatopoeia
Words which mimic the sound they are describing
Allegory
Something symbolic, An allegory can often be a story that represents bigger things
Allusion
Referring to something common and well known. A chance for the writer to show off knowledge and add information that fits the context of the text
Denotation / Denote
The literal definition of something without looking deeply into it.
“What a big mouth!”
Connotation / connote
Associations with a word
Euphemism
When something distasteful is said in a more acceptable way
Hyperbole
An over exaggeration for effect
Irony
Expression of one’s language that normally signifies the opposite
Oxymoron
Two words placed together with different meanings to create a new one.
Pun
A play on words
Rhetorical question
A question with an answer so obvious it’s not required or a question that doesn’t need an answer all together
Enjambment
Lack of punctuation so the sentence just carries on and on without a pause or a stop such as a comma for the reader to rest at as it carries over stanzas until it finally comes to an end.
(This is an example)
Pathetic Fallacy
Using weather and/ or Environment to reflect themes + contexts of text.
In books people don’t die on sunny days
Foreshadowing
Description or narrative which compels the reader to believe something of the nature of which described is going to happen.
Synaesthesia
The overlapping of senses
Tone/ mood
What the poem is intended to sound like. You must look at the whole poem
