Q

With reference to your own experiences of working with primary school learners explain how ensuring that you consider possible adaptations to activities to meet learners’ individual needs will support pupil progress and high-quality learning outcomes.

A
  • STEP principle is important when considering adaptations
  • STEP = space, task, equipment, people
  • inclusion measures within sessions
For example, in one of our sessions there was a little boy who had a broken arm so we needed to make sure he was able to do the activities as well
-> we started by making sure that we asked him if he was comfortable using his other hand
-> he said he could but wasn’t as good/confident
-> so we moved him a lot closer to the net than the others - giving him a better chance
-> i also gave him the chance to throw it if he was finding the racket too hard
  • in making these adaptations it makes sure that all the children are still having the opportunity to progress in their learning
  • as it is said that some disability children believe that they feel more socially outcast from their PE groups (Block et al., 2021)
  • putting these adaptations in plans is key are you are unaware of what students abilities are until they show up
  • it is therefore important for ‘PE lessons require an adequate design which addresses student needs appropriately as students make use of and experience PE movements differently’ (Powell, 2011)
  • children that are advanced need a harder session that those on a lower level
  • ‘better teacher planning and grading skills are detrimental to students disadvantaged by disability’ (Bertills et al., 2018)
