blood supply Flashcards
(17 cards)
brain receives blood supply from
branches of internal carotid arteries
vertebral/basilar arterial system
Internal carotid has 5 branches
1- ophthalmic artery 2- anterior choroidal artery 3- posterior communicating artery 4- bifuricates anterior cerebral artery 5-bifuricates middle cerebral arteries
Anterior cerebral artery
enter longitudinal fissure by passing medial to gyrus rectus
anterior communicating arteries
interconnects 2 anterior cerebral arteries
blood to midsagittal cortical regions as far back as parietoocipital sulcus
some lateral surface of superior frontal gyrus , superior parietal lobule
lenticulostriate branches
from anterior cerebral artery
supply internal structures
middle cerebral artery
gives off many lenticulostriate arteries that enter base of brain
supply deep internal structures
basal ganglia, internal capsule, insula
remaining lateral surface of frontal and parietal, superior and middle temporal gyro
anterior perforated substance
arteries that case small dimples at the points which the small lenticulostriate arteries enter brain
vertebral arteries
branch from arteries in neck- subclavian arteries
enter via foramen magnum
basilar artery
2 vertebral arteries join
PICA
posterior inferior cerebellar artery
1st branch of vertebral artery
supply cerebellum
posterior spinal artery
branch of PICA
Anterior spinal artery
2nd branch of vertebral that unit medially
basilar artery has 3 major paired branches
Anterior Inferior Cerbellar arteries-AICA (cerebellum)
Superior cerebellar arteries (cerebellum)
Posterior cerebral arteries- (cerebrum)
posterior cerebal arteries
midsagittal surfaces of temporal and occipital lobes and lateral peripheral margins of these lobes
Circle of Willis
forms a ring around region of infundibular stalk, optic nerves, optic chasm
COW arteries
internal carotid arteries anterior cerebral arteries anterior communicating artery posterior communicating artery posterior cerebral arteries
*middle cerebral arteries not part of COW
Aneurysms
may develop at junction points of theses arteries
