What are thermal burns?
Burns caused by external heat sources such as hot metal, scalding liquids, steam, flames, house fires, gas, smoking.
What is cold thermal injury?
Frostbite.
What causes chemical burns?
Contact with acids, alkaline, or organic compounds via inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact.
Why might a chemical be ingested?
Children may ingest chemicals accidentally.
What causes contact chemical burns?
Cleaners, lye, disinfectants; absorbed, inhaled, or ingested.
What causes electrical burns?
Intense heat from an electric current.
Complications of electrical burns?
TBI/C-spine injury, ischemia/death of skin/muscle, rhabdomyolysis, AKI.
What layer is affected in a 1st degree burn?
Epidermis only.
What does a 1st degree burn look like?
Red, blanchable skin with no blisters.
Example of a 1st degree burn?
Sunburn.
What layers are involved in superficial partial thickness burns?
Epidermis and superficial dermis.
How does a superficial partial thickness burn appear?
Red, blistered, wet.
Symptoms of superficial partial thickness burns?
Swelling, pain, intact hair follicles.
Healing of superficial partial thickness burns?
Heals spontaneously with minimal scarring when treated properly.
What layers are involved in deep partial thickness burns?
Dermis.
What do deep partial thickness burns look like?
White/yellowish, wet or dry, waxy appearance.
Are blisters present in deep partial thickness burns?
Blisters may be less prominent.
What structures are damaged in deep partial thickness burns?
Hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands.
Why is pain decreased in deep partial thickness burns?
Nerve endings are beginning to be damaged.
Do deep partial thickness burns scar?
Yes — may scar or cause skin color changes
What layers are destroyed in full-thickness burns?
Epidermis and full dermis including base layer.
How do full-thickness burns appear?
White/pale, brown, leathery, or charred.
Is capillary refill present in full-thickness burns?
No — capillaries destroyed.
Do full-thickness burns hurt?
No sensation due to destroyed nerves (may still have pain around the burn).
