Flashcards in Chapter 3.2 Properties of Plastics Deck (8)
1

Plastics are made by a process called

polymerisation

2

There are two types of polymerization

addition polymerization and condensation polymerization

3

Monomers are small molecules that combine to form a

polymer

4

A Polymer is a large molecule formed by combining

many monomer molecules

5

Addition polymerization is the addition of monomer molecules across

their double bonds

6

For addition polymerization to work, the monomers must be

unsaturated

7

Condensation polymerization is the same as addition polymerization except

water or other small molecules such as hydrogen chloride are also produced.

8

Polyester and nylon are examples of synthetic

condensation polymers
