Hypothermal primary fx

Local; decreased edema, anesthesia

Hypothermal secondary fx

Increased blood viscosity, decreased cell metabolism and increased joint stiffness

Indications

Migraine headaches, urticaria, spasticity/TrP *MFS*, sprain/strain, angiomas, warts and herpes

Contraindications

Elderly/infants, cold hypersensitivity, Raynaud's, HBP, chilblains/frostbite, tension headaches, spasm *FM*

Every 20 mins?

Ice packs

Moist towel layer; 20 mins; conduction

Blue ice

Dry towel layer; 20 mins; conduction

Vapocoolant spray
Fluori-methane or ethyl chloride

5 mins; spray at angle from 18-24"

Ice massage (with passive ROM)

Keep moving; 0-20 mins; conduction
