The term for a kind of literature. The three major genres of literature are poetry, drama and the novel (prose- a piece of writing not in verse) these kinds may be subdivided into many other genres such as narrative verse, tragedy, comedy, short story, etc.
What does melodrama mean?
A sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions.

Some critics see A View from the Bridge as melodramatic because of its violent ending.
