what is mechanical ventilation
it uses positive pressures air is pushed into the lung gas flow is stopped and air is allowed to be passively exhaled
different types of ventilator modes
-spontaneous breathing-
-controlled ventilation
-mixed ventilation
-supported spontaneous breathing
controlled ventilation
these take over the entire breathing effort all breaths are controlled by the ventilator.used when a patient can not breath
mixed ventilation
synchronised intermittent mandatory ventilation
if patient does not make effort to breathe the ventilator will be triggered and a breathe will be released- synchronised with patients effort
supported spontaneous breathing
preassure support ventilation . The patient triggers the ventilator with their spontaneous effort to breathe.ventilator responds to the air flow and blows air into the lungs to the pre-set pressure to boost the patient’s inspiratory effortTherefore
Completely spontaneous effort
PEEP
positive end expiratory pressure
maintains a positive pressure in the lungs throughout expiration.prevent the lungs from completly emptying. prevents alveolar collapse
