A

SMA, cramps, like angina of guts, atherosclerosis

what is acute

A

small bowel usually gets infarcted (dies) whereas colon lives (marginal artery)

what is cause

A

embolus usually from AF (forms in left atrium, sticks in a narrow SMA)
in situ thrombosis (virchows triad, dehydrated, hypercoaguable, compression, vasoconstricting drugs)

how is it diagnosed

A
acidosis on gases (low pH, high H+ concentration, high BE)
lactate elevated 
CRP may be normal 
WCC may be up a bit 
CT angiogram

how is it treated

A

quickly!!
resect if non viable
re-anastomose or staple and planned return
if viable you can rarely perform SMA embolectomy
