Neutalisation Reaction
Reacting an acid and a base to produce salt and water.
Acid + Base =
Salt + Water
Acid + Carbonate =
Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Acid + Metal =
Salt + Hydrogen Gas
Titration
A laboratory technique that is used to find out the exact volume of acid needed to neutralise a base.
Equipment
Step 1
Transfer 25cm3 of dilute sodium hydroxide into a conical flask using a pipette.
Step 2
Add three drops of litmus indicator to the conical flask and place it on a white tile.
Step 3
Using a funnel fill the burette to the 0cm3 mark with the dilut hydrochloric acid.
Step 4
Slowly and with continuous swirling of the conical flask add the acid from the burette until the indicator just changes colour. Note the volume of the acid added.
