Types of light-sensitive cells in the eyes
Cones and Rods
cone cells in eyes:
-responsible for all color vision
-concentrated in the center of the retina
-used for detecting fine detail in bright light
rod cells in eyes:
-unable to discern color
-located throughout the retina
-very sensitive in low light
-can take 30 mins to fully adapt to night conditions
FAA Recommended altitude for using supplemental oxygen at night
5000 MSL (compared to 10000 MSL during the day)
Items known to decrease night vision:
-smoking
-alcohol
-lack of oxygen
-fatigue
-CO poisoning
Landing light is required to be on when landing at night if:
-The airplane is operating for hire
Weather considerations for night flight
-cloud bases
-visibility
-temp / dew point spread: make sure you have at least 2 degree difference
-wind direction and speed
-weather forecast at your alternate
