High rates of co-morbid ETOH or substance abuse

Many attempt suicide

Numerous periods of hypomania and of depression persisting for at least 2 years
Doesn't meat DSM criteria for major depression

Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Mood stabilizers: lithium, valproate, carbamazepine
Atypical antipsychotics: Quetiapine (Seroquel), risperidone (Risperdal), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ziprasidone (Geodon), clozapine (Clozaril)
