Flashcards in Midterm - Somatosensory/Vestibular Deck (9):
0

Vestibular system

Equilibrium and eye fixation (subconsciously)
Integrated information received from receptors in inner ears

1

Symptoms of a CVA

Cerebrovascular accident
Nystagmus
Dizziness
Unsteady gait
Hearing impairment

2

Glomus jugulare

Rare slow growing tumor occurring within the jugular foramen
Rarely presents with isolated symptoms
Destructive because of proximity to cranial nerves and major vascular structure

3

Somatosensory system

3 neuron system! (Auditory system = 1 neuron)
Goes through the thalamus

4

3 neuron organization of somatosensory system

1- trigeminal ganglion
2- Brainstem
3- post central gyrus

5

Neglect

When patient fails to recognize that one side of the body and the environmental space surrounding that side of the body
Often with a right hemisphere CVA
Difference is ignoring one side of the body

6

Neglect is manifested by

Failing to eat food on one side of palate
Begins reading at mid sentence
Omits details in drawings
Failing to recognize a part of your body as your own

7

Agnosia

Inability to process sensory information

8

Language association cortex lesion

Wernickes aphasia
