Gaenslen's test

Pelvis and hip
(Drop foot to side)
Pte lays face up. Examiner stands at side (at the pte's pelvis) and leans towards table. Pte flexes the thigh (the distal foot) and hold knee. Examiner then drops the proximal foot.
+ Pain in SI joint or hip
! SI joint pathology

Knee to shoulder test

Pelvis and hip
(Knee to shoulder)
Pte lays face up. Examiner stands at side, grabs ankle (above) and knee (above) then flex the knee/hip and move the knee towards the OPPOSITE shoulder
+ SI joint pain
! SI joint pathology

Gillet's test

Pelvis and hip
(PSIS and center)
Pte stands and examiner sits behind pte, places one thumb on the PSIS and one thumb on S2. Ask pte to raise the leg and stands on one foot.
+ PSIS goes up (normally should goes down) on the non-weight bearing side (raised leg)
! SI joint hypomobility

Trendelenburg's test

Pelvis and hip
(PSIS 2)
Pte stands and examiner sits behind pte, places the two thumbs on either side of PSIS. Ask pte to raise the leg and stand on one foot.
+ PSIS drops on the non-weight bearing side (raised leg)
! SI joint pathology

Patrick's test (Fabere)

Pelvis and hip
(front pushes knee down)
Pte lays face up, crosses leg to place foot on the superior of the knee (on the thigh). Examiner stabilizes pte's ASIS and uses 3 fingers to gently push down the raised knee
+ Pain in hip jt
! Hip or SI joint pathology

Stinchfield test

Pelvis and hip
(Raise and resist)
Pte lays face up and tries to lift leg up, while examiner places hand a bit above thigh and resists.
+ Pain in hip, groin or lower back
! Hip or groin pain - hip pathology. Lower back pain - lumbar or SI joint pathology

Prone knee bending (or Ely) test

Pelvis and Hip
(Back heel to buttock)
Pte lays face down. Examiner grabs angle from below and bring heels to the buttock.
+ Pain
- SI jt dysfunction

Thomas test

Pelvis and hip
(raise knee and see other leg rise. Tight jeans)
Pte lays face up and brings knee to chest (and grab). See if the other thigh rise.
+ thigh of the other leg to rise off. Hip and knee flex
! Hip flexion contracture

Rectus Femoris Contracture test

Pelvis and hip
(dangling leg)
Pte lays face up, with knee dangling off the edge (calf can't touch table). Pte then lift knee and hold it.
+ Examiner sees if the other dangling leg will extend.
! Rectus femoris contracture

Piriformis test

Pelvis and hip
(Side push knee down)
Pte lays side with top leg flexes (60o). Examiner faces the pte, stabilizes the hip with one hand and pushes the other knee down with the other.
+ Pain in piriformus muscle or sciatica (radiating pain)
! Piriformis pain - tight Piriformis. If Sciatica - Piriformis syndrome

Ober's test

Pelvis and hip
(big ABduction)
Pte lays side. Examiner stands behind pte, lift foot (one hand under knee and one under the ankle) and do one circular big ABduction, and return foot to the rear position.
+ Leg remains abduction
! TFL contracture

Hibb's test (pron gapping test)

Pelvis and hip
(stirring leg)
Pte lays face down. Examiner stands at side and places one hand over PSIS and grabs (from below) the ankle and stirring the leg out (I..e internally rotate the hip)
+ Decreased movement of SI joint
! SI jt dysfunction
