Identify Tissues/Cells Flashcards
1
Q
name
A
transitional epithelium
- Squamous cells that must stretch and shrink.
- Appears stratified when relaxed
- Found specifically in the urinary bladder
2
Q
name
A
simple columnar
- One layer of column-like cells
- Note the white goblet cell (mucus producing cell) within the columnar cells
- Function: absorption
- Found in digestive system, upper portion of respiratory tract

4
Q
A
cardiac muscle
- Note the branching of the muscle fibers
- Cardiac muscle fibers also have striations
- Note the intercalated disks (which are actually seams between the muscle cells). They appear as dark bands along the fibers. Many present in this picture.
5
Q
name the tissue
A
simple squamous
- One layer of flat leaf like cells
- Found in the lungs, lining blood vessels, eardrum
- Function: diffusion and filtration
6
Q
A
adipose
7
Q
name
A
ciliated pseudostratified
- Cells appeared to be stratified but actually aren’t. Note the nuclei that are at different levels
- Note the brush border of cilia along the top of the cells
- Found mainly in respiratory tract, cilia used for moving debris out of lungs
8
Q
A
cartilage
Note the chondrocytes within their lacuna
•The intercellular matrix here is a hard gel like substance
9
Q
A
Adipose
- Note the adipose cells that contain mostly fat with their nuclei pushed to the edge of each cell
- Very little intercellular matrix
10
Q
A
smooth muscle
- Cells are ‘spindle shaped’, they taper at both ends
- Muscle appears smooth and wavy, no striations.
11
Q
A
skeletal muscle
12
Q
name the tissue
A
simple cuboidal
- One layer of cuboidal cells
- Found in ducts, tubules of the kidney as shown in this picture, the opening on the inside of the tube is called the lumen
- Also found on the surface of ovaries and the ducts of some glands
