What is sensation
Physical energy that people take from their enviornment and translate into neural signals
What is perception
The processing and interpretation of that sensation
How does bottom up processing work
Driven by sensory information and is data driven, stimuli input leads to stimuli processing which leads to perception
How does top down processing work
Driven by prior knowledge, prior knowledge, experience, expectations, etc lead to perception which leads to stimuli processing
What are Gestalt’s laws of organization
Basic idea grouping, perceptual organization (The way elements are grouped together to create large objects), and perception is not due solely to the operation of feature detectors
What is figure ground
Figure (object) vs ground (background)
What is closure
Close some incomplete shapes and patterns
What is proximity (nearness)
Group elements are placed close together
What is good continuation (continuity)
The edge of one shape will continue into the space and meet up with other shapes
What is common fate
Entities that move together are grouped together
What is paragranz or simplicity
The resulting structure is as simple as possible
What organization do people tend to favor
Simple, symmetric, and regular
What is the ventral (what) pathway
Occipital to inferior temportal cortex, perception pathway, agnosia
What is the dorsal (where) pathway
Occipital to parietal pathway, action pathway, ataxia
