Flashcards in Chapter 3 Deck (66)
What is serum potassium?
Potassium helps in function of cells and muscles. Relevant to cardiac
How much of blood is plasma? In percent?
What is 45% of blood made up of?
Red blood cells (hemoglobin)
What in blood is less than 1%?
White blood cells/platelets
What is serum made up of?
Everything in plasma except for the clotting factor
What is in plasma and their percentages? (3)
1. Water 90%
2. Protein 8%
3. Hormones 2%
What is included in the hormones portion of blood? (3)
Why are tubes color coded?
Depending on the additive
What do anticoagulants do?
Why are tubes drawn in a particular order?
To prevent contaminating later tubes
What does CBC stand for?
Complete blood count
What is the order of the draw? 8
1. Yellow SPS
2. Light blue
3. Gold, red tiger top, red, orange
4. Green, green tiger top
5. Lavender, purple
What does AC stand for?
What is SST?
Used for serum blood to clot. No additives. Serum separator tube
What does PST stand for?
Plasma separator tube
What is creatinine?
Protein in the body caused by muscle breakdown. Can indicate kidney dysfunction or MS
What is a PTT test? What is it for?
Partial thromboplastin time. Monitors heparin dosages
What is a PT test and what is it used for?
Prothrombin time test. Aid in diagnosing liver
What is HbA1c and what does it test?
Hemoglobin A1c/glycated hemoglobin test/glycohemoglobin. Tests glucose
What do Serum chemistries do?
Check Chem 7. Basic metabolic panel
What does the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) do?
A measure of kidney function
What is aerobic?
Bacteria that lives in the presence of oxygen
What is anaerobic?
Bacteria that lives in the absence of oxygen.
What is sodium for? 6
Values are indication of
1. kidney function,
4. endocrine function and various types of trauma,
5. bleeding and
6. water retention problems
What is in the Orange tube?
Thrombin based clot activator
What is in the green tube?
Sodium or lithium heparin
What is the additive for in the green top?
What is the sample in the green top used for?
Plasma chemistry and electrolytes.
What is a common lab test for the green top tube?
Lactate - plasma tube
