How much coverage is needed for a runway to be considered contaminated?
More than 25% of one third of the runway surface area within the required length and width being used
Should a damp runway be treated as wet or dry?
Wet
What is the dew point?
The temperature at which water vapour starts to condense
When does the holdover time begin?
Beginning of the anti-icing treatment
What does LOUT stand for?
Lowest Operational Use Temperature
Why do holdover times give a window of time?
Flight crew can use their judgment, considering factors such as precipitation
Once the holdover time clock has started, can it be stopped for a change in conditions?
No
Who coordinates engine de-icing, and who should you contact for it?
Engineers, via MOC
What are the exceptions to the clean aircraft concept?
A coating of frost less than 3mm on wing lower surfaces, in the area of the fuel tanks
Thin hoarfrost on the fuselage, radome and engine cowl is acceptable, providing surface features (lines or markings) are distinguishable. Do not confuse this for rime ice
Is it permissable to start de-icing when the forward door is open?
Yes, providing the surfaces are well away from the open door, and:
Captain is informed and agrees
Passengers and staff will not be subjected to fluid overspray
Fuselage in vicinity of door is not treated while door is open
Wind conditions mean fluid overspray will not reach open door
Passengers are not boarding through the door via open stairs
When communicating with the remote de-icing team, should you refer to yourself as the flight number, commercial flight number or aircraft registration?
Aircraft registration
What must you not do in the deicing bay?
Extend or retract flaps/slats, move flight controls or apply above idle thrust, unless specifically requested and explicitly cleared to do so
Can you apply anti-icing fluid directly on top of anti-icing fluid, for example if deicing has been paused due to the truck running out of fluid, and the deicing process restarting?
No - old deicing fluid must be removed first
What should you do in the event of the need to evacuate during deicing?
Flash the nose wheel lights and/or any other external lights on and off to alert ground personnel. This will prompt them to get away from the aircraft
What is the normal configuration for remote deicing, in terms of flaps/slats?
Clean (unless there is a specific requirement for the surfaces to be extended
