1

Femur

Location: The thigh
function: largest and longest bone of the skeleton

2

Head of the Femur

Capped with hyaline cartilages
Function: articulates with the acetabulum of the pevlis

3

Fovea Capitis

Location: medial side of the head is a small pit
Function: attachment of the round ligamentum teres

4

Ligamentum Teres

Function: helps to anchor the head of the femur in the acetabulum.

5

Anatomical Neck

Location: after the head, the femur narrows
Function: does not lie in a straight line with the diaphysis, but at an angle that ranges from 120 degrees to 140 degrees.

6

Greater Trochanter

Location: found on the superior/ lateral side,

7

Lesser Trochanter

Location: seen on the inferior/ medial surface

8

Greater and Lesser Trochanter (function)

Serve to attach powerful hip muscles

9

Intertrochanteric crest

Locaion: situated btwn the trochanter on the posterior surface and descending at a steep angle

10

Linea Aspera

Rough line
Location: posterior surface of the diaphysis
Running vertically in the middle third of the femur
Function: attachment of powerful thigh adductor muscles

11

Medial Lateral Condyles (Location)

Distal end of the femur, expanded portion of the diaphysis
Function: articulates with the tibia, forming the synovial hinge joint of the knee.

12

Intercondylar Fossa

Location: deep notch btwn the condyles on the posterior surface

13

Adductor Tubercle

Location: located above the medial condye
Function: attachment of the powerful adductor magnus muscle

14

Popliteal Fossa

Location: diamond shaped region located behind the knee, Bordered on each side by the hamstrong and calf muscles
Function: contains arteries, veins, nerves, lymphatic vessels and collection of lymph nodes that are mebedded in aprotective bed of adipose tissue.

15

Patella Surface

Location: anterior surface of the distal femur
Function: covered with hyaline cartilage for the articulation with the patella

16

Patella

Knee cap, largest sesamoid bones, found supsended in the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle.
