Muscles of the Palm Flashcards
Flexor Sheaths
Location: Around the thends of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle
Function: Fibrous
Flexor Retinaculum
Location: Extending across the wrist
Function: Strong band of connective tissue
Forming the carpal tunnel, contains the tendons of the long flexors to the digits as well as the median nerve
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The flexor retinaculum amy be cut and resealed to relive the pain, where the median nerve is compressed by swelling in this location
Ulnar Artery and Ulnar Nerve
Location: Crossing over the retinaculu on te medial side
Ulnar artery, forming an important anastomosis with the radial artery on the lateral side
Function:
THenar Eminence
Location: Located at the base of the thumb
Function:
Hypothenar Eminence
Location: Located at the base of the little finger
Function: Each formed by three categories of muscle
3 categories of the eminence muscles
Flexor, Abductor, Opponens
Flexor Pollicis Brevis
Closes to the midline of the hand
Location: Flexor muscles represented in the thumb. Attaches to the proximal phalanx
Function: Flex the metacarpo-phalangeal joint of the digt
Flexor Digiti Minimi
Location: Flexor muscle to the little finger. Attaches to the proximal phalanx
Function: Flex the metacarpo-phalangeal joint of the digit
Abductor pollicis Longus and Brevis
Abductor muscles of the thumb
Location: Along the lateral edges of the hand
Function: move the thumb laterally
Abductor Digiti Minimi
Location: Along the lateral edges of the hand
Function: Moves the little finger medially
Opponens Pollicis
Location: Located btwn the flexor and abductor muscles
Function: Act to flex and rotate the thumb so that it meets the little finger
Allows the thumb to touch, index, long and ring fingers
Opponens Digiti Minimi
Location: Located btwn the flexor and abductor muscles
Function: Act to flex and rotae the thumb and little finger so the tips may meet each other.
Adductor Pollicis
Location: Muscles attaches to the base of the proximal phalanx
Function: Assists in oppostion of the thumb, composed of an oblique and a transverse head.
Acts to move the thumb toward the palm.
Flexor Carpi Radialis and Carpi Ulnaris
Location: Extend no further than the base of the metacarpal bones, and do no pass further into the palm
