Staphylococcus aureus

Generic to staphylococcus
- Gram-positive cocci
- facultative anaerobe
- produce catalase

Specific to aureus:
- Coagulase-positive
- Causes skin infections (e.g. cellulitis), abscesses, osteomyelitis, toxic shock syndrome
- Causes a bi-basal pneumonia e.g. I.V. drug users

Staphylococcus epidermis

Generic to staphylococcus
- Gram-positive cocci
- facultative anaerobe
- produce catalase

Specific to epidermis:
- Coagulase-negative
- Cause of central line infections and infective endocarditis
